E-Cigarette Taxes Reduce Vaping Without Increasing Adult Smoking, New Study Finds | Newswise
Summary
A recent study published in Health Economics by researchers at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James, examined the impact of e-cigarette taxes on vaping and smoking habits. The study surveyed 700 adult e-cigarette users and found that both higher pre-tax prices and increased taxes led to a reduction in e-cigarette use, measured by the quantity of products purchased and nicotine consumption. Importantly, the research did not find evidence that raising e-cigarette prices resulted in a corresponding increase in cigarette consumption. Researchers suggest that a tiered tax system, accounting for the diverse range of e-cigarette products (disposables, pods, tanks, etc.), may be more effective than a uniform tax in achieving public health goals. The findings indicate that increasing e-cigarette prices can be a viable strategy for reducing vaping without inadvertently encouraging smokers to return to traditional cigarettes.
