Two major UK law changes affecting anyone who vapes in force from October this year
Summary
Starting this October, the UK government is implementing significant legislative changes under the Tobacco and Vapes Act to reduce the appeal of vaping among young people. A key measure is the introduction of a Vaping Products Duty (VPD) on October 1, which will be set at a flat rate of £2.20 per 10ml of liquid, applying to both domestic and imported products regardless of nicotine content.
Additionally, from October 29, the sale of vapes through vending machines and the free distribution of vaping products will be banned. These measures aim to make vaping less affordable and accessible to minors. Health experts, including representatives from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and the Mental Health Foundation, have praised the legislation for its potential to improve long-term child health outcomes and protect mental health by reducing nicotine addiction.
Further proposals are also being considered through a UK-wide consultation, which includes potential requirements for plain white packaging and keeping vaping products out of sight in retail environments to prevent marketing to children.
