Classified as e‑waste, vapes contain batteries, plastics and hazardous chemicals that can cause fires in waste trucks and pollute the environment; the recycled materials are reprocessed into new batteries, metal products and sometimes fertilisers. Funding for the bins will continue through the 2026‑27 Budget, ensuring ongoing safe disposal for residents. In parallel, the City installed vape recycling bins at youth hubs in central Geelong and Norlane, gathering 58 kg during a 12‑month pilot and supporting a VicHealth‑funded vaping prevention coalition that provides education and support to young people. Officials highlighted the programme’s environmental and public‑health benefits, noting that continued service protects both the community and waste‑collection workers.
