The effects were mediated through the TRPV4 channel, and blocking this channel prevented the disruption. The researchers warn that pregnant women who vape may be exposed to levels of vanillin that could harm embryonic development, urging caution and better ingredient disclosure. The findings also highlight the need for regulatory policies that consider prenatal vulnerability, and the team is investigating other vape chemicals such as menthol and WS‑23.
