Vape Flavoring Linked to Embryo Development Disruption

A study led by UC Riverside and published in Human Reproduction reveals that vanillin, a common e-cigarette flavoring, disrupts early human embryonic development. Researchers exposed human embryonic stem cells to vanillin and found that high concentrations killed cells, while low (nanomolar) concentrations caused loss of pluripotency and forced differentiation into endoderm instead of forming all three essential germ layers (endoderm, ectoderm, mesoderm). This effect occurs via the TRPV4 calcium channel. The findings suggest a mechanism linking vaping to infertility and miscarriage. Professor Prue Talbot advises caution for pregnant women and calls for regulatory policies requiring ingredient disclosure and consideration of prenatal sensitivity.
