Smoking hits record low
Summary
According to the 2025 National Drug Strategy Household Survey, daily smoking in Australia has fallen to a record low of 5.6% among those aged 14 and over. This decline significantly exceeds the federal government's target of keeping adult smoking below 10%.
While smoking rates are dropping, the nicotine market is becoming more fragmented. Vaping use appears to have stabilized, but there is a growing trend toward using multiple nicotine products simultaneously. Additionally, the survey highlighted a concerning rise in the use of illicit tobacco, with 34% of current smokers reporting recent use of unregulated products.
In response, the Australian government has announced stricter regulations on nicotine pouches, prohibiting certain import pathways by 2026. Health experts, including representatives from the Australian Medical Association, emphasize the need for robust enforcement against illicit markets and online sales to protect public health.
