Smoking ban for people born after 2008 to become law
Summary
The Tobacco and Vapes Bill, now passed by both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, will raise the legal age for tobacco sales, effectively creating a smoke-free generation. Anyone born on or after January 1, 2009, will be prohibited from buying tobacco. The bill also introduces a licensing scheme for retailers selling tobacco and vaping products, granting the government greater control over the regulation of these products, including flavors and packaging. Health minister Baroness Merron hailed the bill as “the biggest public health intervention in a generation,” predicting it will save lives. While some in the tobacco industry expressed disappointment over the lack of consideration for retailer concerns, proponents argue the bill, alongside regulation of nicotine pouches, will significantly reduce smoking rates in the UK, mirroring Sweden’s smoke-free status.
