Discovery of synthetic cannabinoids in vapes prompts calls for stronger regulation
Summary
The HSE’s national drug treatment centre lab analysed 76 vape or vape juice products in Ireland during 2026, finding that 28 contained HHC or related semi‑synthetic cannabinoids, eight held potent synthetic cannabinoids, and ten had acetate compounds linked to lung disease. Researchers warned that these substances pose serious physical and mental health risks, including psychosis, loss of consciousness and severe intoxication, and noted frequent mislabelling where products advertised as CBD also contained undisclosed cannabinoids. Professor Eamon Keenan urged regulators to create a multi‑agency group involving Health, Justice, HPRA and food safety authorities, and called for legislation that can swiftly address new psychoactive substances as they emerge.
