Following the discovery of high-risk synthetic cannabinoids in vape products sold in Irish shops and online, health officials have urged stronger regulation. The HSE's national drug treatment centre lab identified substances like HHC, semi-synthetic cannabinoids, and acetate-containing compounds linked to severe health risks, including psychosis and lung damage. Prof Eamon Keenan highlighted that 28 of 76 tested products contained HHC or related compounds, with 10 containing acetates associated with lung disease. Concerns over mislabeling and undisclosed ingredients have prompted calls for collaboration between the Department of Health, Department of Justice, HPRA, and other agencies to address the rapidly evolving market of new psychoactive substances.
