High-risk cannabinoids detected in vapes, edibles
Summary
The Health Service Executive (HSE) has detected high-risk cannabinoids, including semi-synthetic HHC and potent synthetic compounds, in vapes, vape juices, and edibles across Ireland. Testing conducted by the National Drug Treatment Centre Laboratory revealed that many products sold in shops or via illicit markets contain substances linked to severe physical and mental health issues, such as psychosis, loss of consciousness, and lung disease.
Medical experts, including Professor Matthew Sadlier and Professor Colin O'Gara, have expressed grave concerns regarding the impact on young people. They noted that some products labeled as nicotine vapes may have been tampered with to include cannabinoids, leading to unpredictable and dangerous effects. Experts emphasized the need for "primary prevention" and better public health messaging to warn against the dangers of these substances.
Furthermore, medical professionals have criticized current government policies as ineffective, noting that while some substances like HHC have been banned, new semi-synthetic derivatives continue to emerge. There are urgent calls for increased enforcement against rogue operators and more robust legislation to combat the rapid evolution of these psychoactive substances.
