HMRC urges shoppers to report vape shops, barbers and 'dodgy shops'
Summary
HMRC has initiated a major enforcement campaign to combat tax fraud, money laundering, and the sale of illicit tobacco and vapes by encouraging the public to report suspicious businesses. Shoppers are urged to anonymously report vape shops, barber shops, and other high street businesses they suspect of illegal activity. The tax authority will conduct over 30,000 interventions in 2026-27, targeting criminal networks. The improved Report Tax Fraud service allows the public to provide factual details about suspicious behavior, which will be assessed by HMRC enforcement teams to identify patterns and target investigations. Chancellor John Healey emphasized the need to address 'dodgy shops' harming local communities. A new High Street Organised Crime Unit, funded with £30 million, was launched in May to coordinate efforts between HMRC, police, and other agencies.
