Vaping emerging as SUDI risk factor
Summary
Despite declines in infant prone sleeping and maternal smoking, SUDI mortality in New Zealand has plateaued over the last decade. Researchers analyzing coronial data from 2022-2023 identified 101 SUDI cases, finding that 72.3% occurred during direct bed sharing. The study revealed a significant increase in maternal vaping, which was reported in 30.3% of cases and found to be significantly more common in bed-sharing deaths. The authors conclude that vaping is an emerging SUDI risk factor, particularly when combined with bed sharing, and suggest that public health messaging must urgently reflect these risks.
