Netherlands Plans Law to Ban Possession of Large Quantities of Vapes Intended for Trade
Summary
The Dutch Health Minister Hermans is preparing legislation to broaden the ban on illegal vapes by also prohibiting the possession of larger quantities likely intended for trade. Currently, the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) can only seize stock after proving trade has occurred. This new law aims to allow earlier intervention and seizure of stock. The exact quantity threshold for illegal possession is still being determined, and the proposal targets large-scale possession, not individual vapes. Alongside this, the government intends to significantly raise maximum fines for illegal vape trade, particularly addressing sales through social media platforms. The Netherlands has already banned flavored vapes and is working on raising the minimum age for purchasing smoking products to 21.
