Local councillor calls for stricter planning regulations for vape shops
Summary
New data compiled by the Global Investigative Journalism Network reveals that 489 retail premises selling vaping products are located within 500 metres of at least one school, meaning vape shops are near approximately 1 in 7 schools nationwide.
Local representatives are expressing concern that the proximity of these shops and their colorful, attractive appearances make vaping more enticing to young people. Ciarán Fisher, an Independent councillor for Dundalk-Carlingford, has proposed the creation of a specific planning category for vape shops to better manage their locations. Additionally, Leitrim Fine Gael councillor Enda McGloin argued that local authorities must exercise stronger control over the approval process for these businesses.
