Questions raised over number of vape shops and barbers in Scarborough
Summary
Members of the Scarborough Town Council have expressed concern regarding the disproportionate number of vape shops and barber businesses in certain areas of the seaside resort. Councillors, including Sarah Mason and William Stuart, noted that residents have questioned the changing character of shopping streets and the economic viability of having so many similar businesses in close proximity.
In response, North Yorkshire Council Trading Standards officers clarified that a high density of specific businesses does not inherently indicate illegal activity. They explained that enforcement actions, such as investigations into illegal tobacco or vape sales, are typically intelligence-led and require specific complaints or evidence to initiate. While officers can conduct test purchases and inspections, they noted that obtaining closure orders under current legislation remains a significant challenge.
