On September 17, the Amenia Town Board unanimously approved a local law banning smoking and vaping of tobacco and cannabis on all town-owned properties. This includes Town Hall, basketball courts, public spaces along Main Street, Beekman Park, Fountain Square, the Highway Garage, town-owned cemeteries, and the playground behind Town Hall. The ban was introduced in August to align with updated health guidelines, driven by increased cannabis use after legalization in New York and the prevalence of nicotine vapes, according to Town Supervisor Rosanna Hamm. The town will install "no smoking" signs. Violations carry fines of $50 for a first offense and $200 to $500 for subsequent offenses. Constables and Dutchess County Sheriff’s deputies are authorized to issue tickets. Hamm expects most people to comply and noted that enforcement will take time to fully implement.
