Vaping may help more people quit smoking than patches, gum, study finds
Summary
An updated Cochrane review analyzing 80 randomized controlled trials with nearly 30,000 participants found that nicotine e-cigarettes are more effective at helping people quit smoking than traditional nicotine replacement therapies like patches and gum. The review concluded that nicotine vapes led to about four additional successful quitters per 100 people compared to NRT, and two more compared to non-nicotine vapes. While combining e-cigarettes with behavioral support showed the best results, the evidence was less certain. Researchers emphasized that while e-cigarettes are not risk-free, they are a proven, less harmful alternative for smokers who have struggled to quit with other methods, potentially serving as a transitional step away from traditional cigarettes.
