Playful vaping applications still accessible on smartphones

A study reveals that e-cigarette entertainment apps remain widely available on mobile platforms, especially on Android, despite nicotine restrictions.

Summary

A study published in the journal Tobacco Control by researchers from the Truth Initiative and Johns Hopkins University reveals that e-cigarette entertainment apps remain highly accessible on mobile platforms. While Apple's App Store primarily hosts smoking cessation tools, the Google Play Store contains a significant number of entertainment-focused apps, including games and simulators.

These apps utilize gamification elements such as scoring, levels, and virtual rewards, often using bright colors and youthful characters to appeal to teenagers. By simulating the act of vaping through microphones or visual effects, these apps may frame nicotine use as a recreational or creative activity rather than a health risk.

The researchers conclude that current self-regulation by digital platforms is insufficient to protect minors. They advocate for stricter monitoring and the integration of mobile app content into broader tobacco prevention policies to counter the nicotine industry's shift toward digital and interactive marketing.
