What are the new vaping rules? UK government extends under-18 ban
Summary
The UK government has implemented new vaping rules that extend the under-18 ban to cover all vapes and nicotine products, including pouches, strips, pearls, and nicotine-free vapes, effective from Thursday, October 29. Adults who buy or attempt to buy these products for anyone under 18 are committing an offence. The measures also prohibit giveaways, substantial discounts, and vending-machine sales, and allow rogue retailers to be hit with fixed penalty notices. Trading Standards will lead retail enforcement in England, supported by up to £30 million a year until 2028/29, including up to £10 million annually for Trading Standards and the recruitment of 120 specialist apprentices. Minister of State for Public Health and Patient Safety Dame Diana Johnson described the Tobacco and Vapes Act as "the greatest piece of public health legislation in a generation" and said the extension stops businesses from "cashing in on our children's health." The rules follow July proposals including a ban on colourful packaging and restrictions on flavours aimed at children, and come as more than one million children are estimated to have tried vaping, with 370,000 vaping underage.
