Vaping Is Likely Reshaping The Future Of Cancer In The US, Study Argues

Usnews
Study finds vaping replacing smoking, potentially reducing future US cancer rates.

Summary

A study analyzing federal health survey data from 2015 to 2023 found that cigarette smoking declined across nearly all age groups, with the steepest drop among young adults aged 18 to 34. At the same time, exclusive use of e-cigarettes rose, driven largely by vaping, while dual use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes remained uncommon at only 2% to 3% of adults. Older adults aged 55 and over were less likely to switch to vaping, continuing to smoke despite potential health benefits. The researchers developed a population harm‑reduction index showing that vaping surpassed smoking among 18‑ to 24‑year‑olds, indicating a shift toward less harmful nicotine products. Although no nicotine product is completely safe, the move away from combustible tobacco could substantially lower future smoking‑related cancer deaths in the United States. The study was funded by the US National Cancer Institute and the Food and Drug Administration and received no vaping industry support.
