Muhannad Haddara: ACT vape importer avoids jail over 215 vapes
Summary
Muhannad Haddara, 21, pleaded guilty to supplying vaping goods after authorities discovered he imported at least 20 packages containing 215 illegal vapes from China. The scheme was uncovered in October 2024 when a delivery driver became suspicious of packages with weight inconsistent with their labels. Haddara used unencrypted phone messages to coordinate sales through intermediaries, two of whom were also sentenced. In the ACT Supreme Court, Acting Justice Peter Berman described Haddara as the "prime mover" in the enterprise and noted nicotine's addictive nature. Haddara received a two-year recognisance release order with a $100 surety, allowing him to serve his sentence in the community rather than prison.
