Public urged to have say on new vaping rules
Summary
A public consultation has been launched in Fermanagh to gather input on proposed changes to the packaging, display, and marketing of vaping and nicotine products. This initiative is part of implementing the Tobacco and Vapes Act, which seeks to combat the rising use of vapes among children and young people.
Health Minister Mike Nesbitt noted that 15 percent of 11 to 18-year-olds in Northern Ireland report vaping, often driven by product visibility in shops. Proposed regulations include restrictions on shop displays, plain packaging, and flavor descriptions. Additionally, starting October 29, the sale of all vapes and nicotine products to anyone under 18 will be prohibited.
Chief Medical Officer Professor Michael McBride emphasized that nicotine addiction can cause lifelong damage to brain development and mental health in children. While acknowledging vaping's role in helping adults quit smoking, he stressed that these products are not risk-free and must be kept away from minors.
