Vaping is 'viable' way to quit smoking and 'more effective' than nicotine gum and patches, experts find
Summary
A review of 80 studies involving nearly 30,000 people has found that vaping is a "proven and viable" method for quitting smoking. While experts acknowledge that vapes are "unlikely to be completely risk-free," they are "less harmful than smoking." The research indicates that vaping is more effective than other nicotine substitutes like gum or patches, leading to a 61 per cent increased likelihood of successfully quitting after six months. Dr. Nicola Lindson and Dr. Jamie Hartmann-Boyce emphasized that regulated e-cigarettes are substantially less harmful than tobacco. They also warned that unlicensed e-cigarettes can be dangerous due to issues like unstable batteries and harmful chemicals, advising users to only purchase devices approved by regulatory bodies like the MHRA in the UK. Cancer Research UK, which funded the study, supports the findings, noting that legal vapes are an effective tool to help people stop smoking.
