Ford pressures credit card companies to block purchase of illegal vaping products
Summary
Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford has joined a coalition of 24 other Attorneys General in sending letters to major credit card companies, including American Express, Capital One, Citi Group, Mastercard, Visa, PayPal, Stripe, Sezzle, and Block. The letter urges these companies to take stronger action to prevent their platforms from being used to facilitate the sale of illegal vaping products. Attorney General Ford stated that "illegal vaping products are a public health hazard and a danger to consumers—especially children" and emphasized the need for credit card companies to crack down on the use of their platforms for purchasing unregulated and illegal products. Under federal law, e-cigarettes must receive authorization from the FDA before they can be legally marketed in the United States. To date, the FDA has authorized just 41 e-cigarette products, none of which are in flavors besides tobacco or menthol. Ford noted that the majority of vapor products sold are illegal, and many online retailers are failing to comply with federal laws banning their sale. The coalition is pushing for a meeting with the credit card companies to discuss solutions.
