Glasgow directors banned for nine years over £15m vape tax evasion scheme

Glasgowworld
Two Glasgow directors were banned for nine years for a £15m tax evasion scheme involving vapes disguised as medical equipment.

Summary

Kyle McGinness and Leanne Moynes, directors of YSK Enterprises Limited, have been banned from being company directors for nine years. They orchestrated a scheme to evade over £15 million in VAT, customs duty, and corporation tax by importing more than 350,000 vapes from China between February and April 2023. The vapes were mislabelled as medical nebulisers to conceal their true nature. The scheme was uncovered when Border Force intercepted a shipment in 2023, revealing the company owed HMRC over £15 million in unpaid taxes, plus an additional £437,101 in corporation tax. The company entered liquidation in 2024. An investigation also found that Moynes failed to preserve accounting records, making it impossible to trace over £1.6 million of the company's assets. Officials from the Insolvency Service, HMRC, and Border Force condemned the deliberate deception, stating it posed risks to consumers and legitimate businesses. The disqualifications prevent McGinness and Moynes from managing, forming, or promoting a company without court permission.
