Arlington joins a growing number of Texas cities cracking down on indoor vaping
Summary
The City of Arlington has unanimously voted to expand its smoke-free ordinance to include vaping devices and e-cigarettes. This decision aims to protect public health by prohibiting the use of these products indoors. According to the American Heart Association, smoke and aerosol from e-cigarettes contain heavy metals and fine particles that can worsen heart and lung diseases. Arlington is now part of a growing trend in Texas, with over 90 cities adopting similar expanded smoke-free ordinances. "Arlington is proving that clean indoor air is a basic right—not a luxury," said Alisa Sandmann, Community Advocacy Director for the American Heart Association. The expansion is expected to reduce exposure to harmful secondhand smoke and aerosol. The American Heart Association notes that tobacco use causes over 168,000 cardiovascular disease deaths annually nationwide, with Texas accounting for an estimated 28,000 deaths and over $10.29 billion in healthcare costs. Research indicates that smoke-free laws improve public health and can lead to increased consumer traffic.
