The March meeting of New Hampshire’s Solid Waste Working Group (SWWG) centered on improving the management of difficult-to-recycle materials and reducing waste costs for taxpayers. Key topics included Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), a system where producers contribute to the funding of recycling programs for items like paint, batteries, mattresses, and vapes – with 146 EPR laws now enacted across 35 states. TerraCycle presented a prepaid shipping program for vape recycling, aiming to recover valuable materials and safely handle hazardous components. The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) announced approximately $626,000 in new funding and an upcoming statewide food waste study to be released in June. A PaintCare bill, despite passing both legislative chambers, was vetoed due to concerns regarding EPR fees. The next SWWG meeting is scheduled for April 24th and is open to the public.
