MMA urges govt to explain vape nicotine exemption from poisons list
Summary
The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has called on the government to clarify a reported proposal by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad to exempt liquid nicotine used in vape products from the Poisons List, which reportedly received Poisons Board endorsement. MMA president Dr Sivanaesan Letchumanan said the association strongly opposes the move if true, warning it echoes 2023 when the government proceeded with an exemption despite board opposition—a decision later struck down by the High Court in May as irrational and economically driven. He highlighted growing concerns over drug-laced vape products, noting the Home Ministry seized 718.43kg of suspect vape products and made 585 arrests in 400 cases between 2023 and June 2026. Dr Sivanaesan questioned whether the government remains committed to a nationwide vape ban targeted for 2026, as the minister had previously suggested, and urged immediate clarification, reaffirmation of the ban commitment, and a clear implementation timeline, stressing that public health must take precedence over commercial interests.
