Mount Pleasant considers restrictions on vape, smoke shops after incoming business sparks concern
Summary
Mount Pleasant Town Council is moving forward with zoning amendments that would bar smoke and vape shops from operating within 1,000 feet of a school, church or park, and prevent one such shop from opening within 1,500 feet of another to avoid clustering. The town currently has no such distance restrictions. The push followed intense backlash from parents over a planned shop called 54 Smoke and Vape at 709 Coleman Blvd., slightly under 1,000 feet from Moultrie Middle School and even closer to Hibben United Methodist Church, which houses the private University School of the Lowcountry. More than 70 parents submitted comments, and the Charleston County School District also urged the town to block the business. The design review board denied the shop's request for five LED signs, and the nine-member council voted unanimously to advance the restrictions. The ordinance heads to committee next month, with a second and final reading expected before year's end. If passed, Mount Pleasant would join Columbia, which adopted a 1,000-foot limit in 2023, and Aiken County, which adopted a 2,000-foot limit in 2025.
