In late July, a schoolboy was caught on a 10‑second clip gripping a black swan in an inflatable boat near Dawesville, forcing the bird to inhale vapor from a battery‑powered device. The boy, later appearing before the Mandurah Children’s Court, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty. His lawyer claimed the swan had a fishing lure in its neck, which the boy removed before releasing the bird back into the water. The magistrate condemned the act, saying it was "like treating a young child in a cruel way" and called it a "serious offence." A second boy, older, was also charged after slapping the swan and recording the incident. Both minors, whose identities are withheld, will face further court dates in September and are prohibited from contacting each other.
