Vape cases with synthetic drugs strengthen ban case
Summary
Data on 402 vape seizures linked to synthetic drugs provides a strong basis for the government to consider a ban, says Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. He stated that the detection of synthetic drugs such as benzodiazepine, nimetazepam, MDMA, cannabinoids, tetrahydrocannabinol and methamphetamine in vape preparations is clearly prohibited and illegal for use, particularly among minors. Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay noted the emergence of a new synthetic drug known as "Piu Piu" in electronic cigarette liquids as further justification for a ban. The Ministry of Health (MOH) views the proliferation of such vape liquids seriously and is committed to addressing the threat through a comprehensive approach involving strategic cross-agency cooperation with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Royal Malaysia Police. This enforcement effort complements the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852) and supports initiatives like the mQuit Services Memorandum of Understanding, the JomQuit platform, and the Cik Era AI application to reduce smoking and vaping.
