Vape shops in Scotland to be excluded from business rates relief
Summary
The Scottish government has announced that vape shops will be barred from receiving business rates relief starting April 1, 2027. This decision aligns the tax exemptions with public health commitments, placing vape shops in the same category as betting shops and payday lenders.
In addition to this exclusion, Deputy First Minister Jenny Gilruth confirmed an independent review into the 2026 non-domestic property revaluation process. This follows reports of significant tax hikes and inconsistent valuations that have caused financial distress for many businesses. The review aims to address anomalies in how rates are calculated and improve the appeals system.
While some business leaders welcomed the move to address valuation anomalies, political opponents criticized the government's response. Critics from the Labour, Conservative, and Green parties argued that the measures are insufficient, calling for more radical reforms to the complex and often unaffordable business rates system.
