New statement identifies critical gaps in the science guiding e-cigarette regulation
Summary
A new research statement published in the May 2026 issue of the journal CHEST highlights significant gaps in the scientific evidence needed to effectively regulate electronic cigarettes (ECs) and protect public health. Developed by the CHEST Tobacco and Vaping Workgroup, the article "Critical Gaps in the Scientific Basis for Electronic Cigarette Regulation" identifies four prioritized research questions regarding population health impacts, nicotine delivery limitations, noncardiac health risks, and flavorant effects. The panel provides 13 recommendations, including conducting pragmatic trials on access restrictions, expanding estimates of toxicant exposure, and prioritizing the quantification of aerosol toxicity. "Effective regulation depends on strong, targeted scientific evidence, and right now, that evidence base is incomplete," said lead author Frank T. Leone, MD, FCCP. The statement reflects CHEST's commitment to reducing tobacco-related disease burden and advocates for stronger tobacco control measures and increased research funding.
