Mayor Lan Vaughan noted that despite regular cleanups and a sand-sifting machine, cigarette butts and vape cartridges were still being found on the beach. The initial focus will be on public education about the new rule. Violators could face a $250 ticket, with repeat offenders potentially fined up to $500 and facing up to 60 days in jail. A designated smoking area is available in the county parking lot.
