2FIRSTS | UK Proposes Stricter Vape Packaging Rules as Retailers Warn of £330 Million Impact

2Firsts
The UK is consulting on stricter vape packaging and display rules to reduce youth appeal, sparking industry warnings of high costs.

Summary

The UK government has launched a 12-week consultation to tighten regulations on vape packaging, appearance, and retail displays. The proposed measures aim to reduce the appeal of vaping products to children and young people by restricting colors, branding, imagery, and certain flavor descriptions. Additionally, the government is considering restrictions on device design, such as banning decorative lights, and requiring products to be displayed out of sight in retail stores.

While health organizations support these measures to combat youth vaping rates, industry groups have expressed significant concerns. The campaign group We Vape estimates the proposals could result in a financial impact exceeding £330 million for retailers, wholesalers, and manufacturers due to compliance and inventory transition costs. The Independent British Vape Trade Association (IBVTA) noted that while they support reducing youth accessibility, excessive regulation must not undermine vaping's effectiveness as a smoking cessation tool for adults.
