Selena Gomez Reveals How Nicotine Vaping Addiction Changed Her Voice: What Happens To Your Vocal Cords?
Summary
Selena Gomez has opened up about how her nicotine vaping addiction changed her voice, sparking widespread online discussion and prompting fans to note differences in how she sounds. While these observations are not medical evidence, they have drawn attention to the potential effects of vaping on vocal health. Dr. Lalit Mohan Parashar, Senior Consultant in ENT and Head & Neck Surgery at PSRI Hospital in Delhi, explains that vaping can affect voice quality because the aerosol irritates and inflames the throat and airway tissues, potentially causing hoarseness, a raspy or weaker voice, throat clearing, dryness, and even difficulty reaching high notes. He notes that swelling or changes in vocal cord vibration can alter pitch, including making the voice deeper, but such changes are not necessarily permanent. Recovery depends on the severity and duration of exposure and whether the vocal cords have sustained lasting damage, with temporary dryness and inflammation often improving after quitting. Dr. Parashar advises stopping vaping entirely rather than switching flavours or lowering nicotine strength, drinking water regularly, avoiding forceful singing and shouting, and resisting frequent throat clearing. If hoarseness persists for three to four weeks, or sooner if symptoms are severe or worsening, an ENT specialist should be consulted, and difficulty breathing requires urgent medical attention.
