Govt. moves to restrict vape imports
Summary
President Irfaan Ali announced on Saturday night that Guyana will restrict the importation of all types of vaping products due to concerns about widespread and unregulated use, especially among children and young people. Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh will soon sign an order under the Customs Act, Chapter 82:01, imposing the restrictions, with exceptions requiring approval from the Minister of Health, the National Tobacco Control Council or the Tobacco Control Board. President Ali said the measure addresses public health risks such as exposure to toxic substances, nicotine addiction, respiratory problems, and potential effects on mental health and brain development, while allowing legitimate medicinal, therapeutic and alternative applications under health authority supervision. He urged parents, teachers, and community leaders to educate young people about the dangers of vaping, emphasizing the decision followed engagements with concerned citizens. The restrictions aim to curb recreational use but not prevent legitimate applications, aligning with broader international efforts to strengthen vaping regulation. The order will establish the restrictions and framework for exceptions granted by designated health authorities.
