PSC supports vape import restrictions to protect Guyana’s young people
Summary
The Private Sector Commission (PSC) has endorsed the Government of Guyana’s measures to restrict the importation of vapes and vaping products, as announced by President Dr. Mohamed Irfan Ali. The PSC views these restrictions as an important step to protect the health and well-being of children and young people, emphasizing that nicotine is highly addictive and particularly risky for developing youth. It warns that attractive packaging and flavourings can misleadingly suggest vaping is harmless, and asserts that public-health protection must take precedence over commercial interests. The PSC calls on importers, distributors, and retailers to comply fully with the new requirements and to avoid sales and marketing practices that encourage vaping among minors. It stresses that clear implementation guidance and cooperation between authorities and the business community are essential. The Commission also supports sustained public education, urging that parents, teachers, health professionals, and community organisations be equipped to help young people understand vaping risks and make informed decisions, and that those with nicotine dependence have access to non-stigmatising support to quit. The PSC commends the President’s attention to the issue and calls for broad national support so Guyana’s children and young people can grow, learn, and pursue their ambitions in good health.
