GCCI supports measures to restrict vape imports in Guyana
Summary
The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has welcomed President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali's announcement of measures to restrict vaping product imports into Guyana, citing the need to safeguard public health, particularly for children and young people. The Chamber expressed concern over the increasing accessibility of vaping products among school-aged children and the associated risks of nicotine exposure and other harmful substances. While affirming that trade is essential to Guyana's economic development, the GCCI stressed that commercial activity must be accompanied by a responsibility to protect consumer health and safety. It called for clear regulatory guidelines, consistent enforcement, and engagement with affected businesses, with particular attention to preventing illicit trade that could undermine the public health benefits. The Chamber also urged strengthened monitoring at ports of entry, clearly defined importation and exemption procedures, and effective enforcement against unauthorised distribution to ensure the restrictions reduce access to vaping products without creating opportunities for unregulated markets.
