Tourists face fines of up to €3k for breaking new rules in Spanish hotspot
Summary
Holidaymakers heading to Tenerife, a popular Spanish holiday destination, have been warned of strict new beach regulations that could result in fines of up to €3,000. The La Laguna City Council passed a motion on Wednesday, October 7, prohibiting camping, overnight stays, smoking, vaping, littering, and playing loud music on beaches, natural pools, and the coastline. The use of speakers or sound equipment that disturbs others is banned except during emergencies or with official authorisation, and using soap, shampoo, or hygiene products in public swimming pools, showers, and bathing areas is also prohibited. These restrictions apply to all beaches and natural pools in the municipality, including Bajamar beach and its adjoining natural swimming pool, as well as the natural pools of Jover in Tejina, La Barranquera in Valle de Guerra, and El Arenisco in Punta del Hidalgo.
Fines vary by severity: up to €300 for minor offences, €300 to €1,000 for serious offences, and €1,000 to €3,000 for very serious offences. Smokers and vapers receive a warning if they stop immediately. The rules apply only to the La Laguna municipality, not the whole of Tenerife. The council aims to foster coexistence between tourists and residents while preserving the coastline's ecological health.
Alongside these restrictions, La Laguna will improve accessibility with adapted bathrooms and more seating, especially during peak season. All municipalities on the island are investing €80 million to clean up the coastline and achieve a "zero waste" goal for Tenerife, following criticism over poor sanitation that led to beach closures.
