New Alabama laws take effect
Summary
On October 1, a series of new laws passed by the Alabama Legislature took effect, introducing broad statutory changes. These include Trey's Law, which invalidates non-disclosure clauses related to sexual abuse; Beau's Law, which sets baseline requirements for outdoor dogs; the Child Predator Death Penalty Act, which makes certain sexual offenses against children under 12 capital offenses; the Safe Streets Act, which increases penalties for hit-and-run and impaired-driving incidents; the Highway Safety and Fairness Act, which mandates documentation and English proficiency for foreign commercial drivers; and indoor vaping restrictions under the Clean Indoor Air Act. Other laws include the Alabama Property Protection Act against real estate fraud, a temporary teaching certificate pathway for military veterans, elimination of the five-day waiting period to report towed vehicles, and a law enforcement family scholarship program.
