Last chance for retailers to comment on the future of vaping
Summary
The UK Government's consultation on the future of vaping and nicotine products closes tonight, 2 October, marking the final opportunity for retailers to have their say. Launched in July by the Department of Health and Social Care, the consultation covers proposals such as plain packaging, display bans, and restrictions on how vape products can be described and sold across the UK. Industry bodies including the Association of Convenience Stores, the Federation of Independent Retailers, and Bira have urged retailers to respond, warning that display bans could be costly, drive legitimate traders out of the market, and push consumers towards illicit sellers. Some retailers support stronger age verification and child protection measures, while suppliers like ELFBAR and British American Tobacco stress the value of retailer input in shaping proportionate, evidence-based regulations. From 29 October 2026, all consumer nicotine products will be restricted to over-18s, and from 1 January 2027, the legal age of sale for tobacco will rise annually. Responses close at 11.59pm tonight.
