Glasgow group raises concerns over vape shop near tearooms
Summary
Garnethill Community Council (GCC) has written to local councillors over a vape shop opening next to the historic Mackintosh Tearooms, urging "careful consideration" due to fire risks. The move follows a fire on Union Street on Sunday, March 8, which started in an unlicensed vape shop and destroyed a B-listed building, leaving only its facade. In a Facebook statement, GCC noted that Glasgow has already lost Mackintosh's Glasgow School of Art to fire and that a recent fire reportedly started in a vape shop, proving the risk is real. They asked councillors to consider measures to protect the tearooms and the city's architectural heritage. Street artist Ashley Rawson also protested by displaying an "unexploded vape" artwork, warning of the threat from such shops. The Mackintosh Tearooms, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald, opened in 1903 and are the only surviving tearooms designed by Mackintosh for Catherine Cranston.
