Hopes for smoke-free generation dwindling: 40% of young adults smoke or vape
Summary
The Dutch government's ambition to achieve a smoke-free generation by 2040 faces significant challenges, with research revealing that 40% of young adults aged 18-29 smoke or vape. This percentage is highest among young adults, declining to 30% in thirties, 17% among those over 45, and 10% for those 60 or older. Social media's influence is particularly concerning, with 75% of young adults watching smoking or vaping videos, and a third admitting these videos tempt them to start. Despite a ban since July 2023, over a quarter purchase cigarettes and vapes via social media. Pediatric pulmonologist Noor Rikkers warns that young vapers are three times more likely to start smoking, with 70% of those who vape monthly also smoking cigarettes. The smoke-free generation goal is part of the National Prevention Agreement, which aims for no young people to smoke or vape and only 5% of adults by 2040.
