Vaping and cannabis hit record highs among young adults in 2025: Survey

A University of Michigan survey reveals record-high vaping and cannabis use among young adults in 2025, with 19% vaping and 29% using cannabis in the past 30 days.

Summary

A large national survey conducted by the University of Michigan found that young adults' use of nicotine vapes and cannabis reached all-time highs in 2025. The annual Monitoring the Future survey, supported by the National Institutes of Health, reported that 19% of young adults (ages 19–30) used nicotine vapes in the past 30 days, tripling since 2017. Cannabis use was reported by 29% of young adults, just below the previous year's record, with 12% using it daily. While cigarette smoking declined to 8%, nicotine pouch use (e.g., Zyn) doubled from 5% to 13% since 2023. Experts expressed concern over rising cannabis and nicotine use, particularly amid FDA approvals of flavored vapes and nicotine pouches. Alcohol remains the most common substance, though its use is declining. The survey also noted a slight increase in heroin use (0.6% in 2025) and a decrease in psychedelic use (7%). Public health officials emphasized the need for continued monitoring and targeted interventions to protect young people.
