Hero nurse saved patient who set own head on fire while vaping in hospital bed
Summary
A patient in her 50s accidentally set her head on fire at Sunderland Royal Hospital after using an e-cigarette while connected to a high-flow oxygen supply. The incident caused significant damage, melting the patient's oxygen mask into her bedsheets and scorching the hospital floor.
Nurse Emmanuel Ndubuisi acted heroically by rushing toward the flames, isolating the oxygen supply, and using a fire extinguisher to suppress the fire. For his quick thinking and composure under extreme pressure, Ndubuisi was honored with the Cavell Star Award, which recognizes exceptional NHS staff.
Following the incident, the South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust issued a stern warning to patients and visitors regarding the lethal dangers of vaping or smoking on hospital wards.
